FRAMING THE HOUSE
The colorful new gardens complement
Sabrina and Andrew’s brightly painted
Victorian. “It was a real conversation
starter with neighbors,” says Sabrina.
Bigham-Holich and Andrew Holich, cutting
the ugly strip of grass in front of their Elgin,
Illinois, house was all work and no reward.
To make their lives easier, Sabrina and
Andrew opted to replace the grass with
sun-loving perennials, whose upkeep is little
more than an annual cleanup, snipping old
blooms, and periodically adding new mulch.
The couple learned how to divide their favorite
plants; now they can continue to expand their
garden without breaking the bank.
What began as a practical solution became a
passion. “Before we knew it, the garden was
less about getting rid of the slope we had to
mow and more about the excitement of our
growing garden,” says Sabrina.
